QLD Patriots Head Coach Announcement

Published Wed 17 Sep 2025

Softball Queensland (SQ) appoints Scott Sunley as its next Queensland Patriot’s Head Coach.

The selection panel has now completed its interviews and assessment for its next Patriots Head Coach.  The panel was impressed by Scott’s commitment to supporting SQ’s pathway programs, teams, and competitions, as we continue to identify and develop the talent that is so important as the Patriots program strives for success at the national open men’s level,” SQ CEO, Ross Symonds said. Scott has over the years been successful in coaching several SQ’s underage teams to win national championships.

“His appointment, for an initial two years, is not only a credit to Scott, but also to the depth of talent and experience that we have across the state.”  Sunley is a member of the SQ Hall of Fame and is renowned for his tactical acumen.

Upon his appointment, Sunley said, “having spent many years coaching junior teams for Queensland, it has always been a personal goal of mine to one day lead the Open Men’s team. As a former player who was fortunate to win 2 national titles at this level, I feel a strong connection to the team and everything it stands for. I understand the responsibility that comes with this role and won’t take it lightly. The journey won’t be easy, and it’s been some time since Queensland have won an Open Men’s title. But I believe we have the makings of something special and with the right mindset and hard work this group has the potential to build a great legacy. It an incredible honour to be appointed as head coach, and I’m truly grateful for the opportunity.

SQ has also appointed Fabian Barlow as one of the two assistant coaches to support Scott.
