WBSC Induction - Terry Downes

Congratulations to Terry Downes on his WBSC induction. Terry was formally inducted at the Softball Queensland Awards dinner.  Terry has an impressive Softball career, full details here.

Terry Downes had a long and distinguished career representing the Queensland Open Men’s team for 15 years from 1992 – 2009. He was Captain for 4 years.

Terry was one of, if not the best utility players that Queensland has ever had, he pitched the winning game for the Queensland Men’s first ever National Title in 1995.

He holds the Australian record of being the first player (male or female) to win every award at the National Championships.

1995 Best Pitcher Award, 1998 Best Batter Award and 2002 Most Valuable player Award.

Later in 2002 he became the first recipient of the Australian Softballer of the Year Award.

Terry was a member of the Australian Open Men’s team from 1995 – 2009, attending four Men’s World Championships and was Vice -Captain for 3 years.

Terry was a member of the Open Men’s team in 2004 when they won their first ever international medal, Bronze at the XI Men’s Softball World Championship in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Their second ever international medal, Silver in 2006 at the Men’s Commonwealth Championships in Melbourne, Australia.

Terry played his final Tournament for Australia in 2009 when the Aussie Steelers won their first ever Gold Medal at the XII Men’s Softball World Championship, played in Saskatoon, Canada.

Terry Downes was inducted into the Softball Australia Hall of Fame as a member of the Gold Medal winning Steelers team in 2009 and as an individual athlete in 2013.  In 2013 Terry was inducted into the Softball Queensland Hall of Fame. 

In 2022 Terry was inducted into the World Baseball Softball Confederation Hall of Fame.

Terry has tremendous pride in representing the Australian Women’s Team as a Specialist Coach and massage therapist for 6 years.

He attended the 2004 Athens Olympics (Silver Medal), 2008 Beijing Olympics (Bronze Medal) and the XI Women’s World Championship in Beijing, China 2006 (Bronze Medal)
